Insuring a Toyota
Through the years, Toyota has managed to stay near the top of the car manufacturing game. It has maintained a high level of popularity while many of its competitors have faced serious problems. Although these vehicles tend to cost a little more than other cars in their segment, they are imbued with safety, reliability, durability and refinement, so many people are happy to pay a little more. When you buy a Toyota, you can rest assured that it will last a very long time. Another perk is that you won't have to pay an exorbitant price to keep it insured. In fact, this automaker ranks eighth on a list of 36 vehicle makes in terms of insurance affordability. The average yearly cost to insure a Toyota is $1,408.07, which is extremely reasonable. You should take that into account when deciding whether or not to buy one of their vehicles. The slightly higher MSRP is largely offset by the low insurance costs.

Toyota's Rise to Prominence
The name comes from its founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, who started working on developing his first vehicle in the early 1930s. The first prototype debuted in the year 1935, which is the same year that the Toyota Motor Corporation came into existence. The business hit the ground running. During the 1940s, many different models were produced, and a pickup truck debuted as well. The first vehicles arrived on U.S. shores near the end of the 1950s. The small, fuel-efficient designs of many Toyota vehicles made them extremely popular during the fuel-strapped 1970s. The auto manufacturer rose to exceptional prominence in the U.S. during the 1980s and never looked back.
Impeccable Safety Ratings Bring Down Insurance Prices
One thing that mitigates the slightly higher price tags of most Toyotas is an impeccable reputation for safety. Most of their cars earn very high marks in crash tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, or IIHS, has awarded the Prius with across-the-board scores of "Good," which is the top possible rating. The same thing can be said for the Highlander and the Camry, which are both extremely popular. Insurance companies like safe cars and tend to give them lower premiums, which largely explains how affordable it is to insure a Toyota.

High Rates of Theft May Bring Up Insurance Costs
Although these vehicles are cheap to insure, they'd be even cheaper still if they weren't popularly targeted by car thieves. The National Insurance Crime Bureau, or NICB, ranked the Toyota Camry in first place on its list of the top 100 most stolen vehicles in the U.S. That list was from 2002, however. The list of the top ten most stolen vehicles, from 2010, ranks the 1991 Camry in third place. Luckily, the other factors help to balance out the cost to insure these vehicles.
Relatively Affordable MSRPs Help Keep Costs Low
Toyota cars are not expensive; there are just usually other cars in any given segment that are more affordable. The Camry, for instance, has a starting MSRP of around $22,000. The Highlander has a starting price of about $28,000. The popular Prius can be had for as little as $19,000. There are cheaper cars, but the solid reputation that the automaker enjoys justifies the extra expense for many people.
The typical cost to insure various popular Toyota cars is as follows:
- Camry 4-Cylinder Sedan - $1,270.00
- Highlander 6-Cylinder SUV - $1,227.00
- Prius 4-Cylinder Hatchback - $1,341.00
